Urgent Appeal to WFP and Other Donors Addressing the Severe Drought Crisis in Tigray

Dear David Beasley WFP Director General
World Food Programme and other donor organizations,

I hope this message finds you in good health. I am writing to bring your immediate attention to the dire situation unfolding in Tigray, where a severe drought has left millions of people in urgent need of assistance. The region has been subjected to years of conflict, resulting in a complete siege and devastating war that has caused widespread destruction of economic infrastructure and agricultural land.

The consequences of this prolonged conflict, coupled with the ongoing humanitarian access restrictions and lack of modern agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers and improved seeds, have had a devastating impact on the livelihoods of the Tigrayan people. With the recent scarcity of rainfall in the Raya, Eastern, South- Eastern, and Central zones of Tigray, the situation has exacerbated, leading to a hidden drought crisis that urgently requires intervention.

In addition to the already formidable challenges faced by the people of Tigray, the scarcity of rainfall has resulted in significantly decreased agricultural productivity and a deepening food crisis. The combination of conflict-induced displacement, destroyed infrastructure, limited access to humanitarian aid, and now the impacts of drought has left numerous internally displaced persons (IDPs) in temporary shelter, with limited access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and healthcare.

Given the severity of the situation, I humbly appeal to your esteemed organization and all donors for immediate action. The people of Tigray are in desperate need of lifesaving assistance, including food aid, clean water, medical supplies, and shelter. It is crucial that we act swiftly to ensure that the most vulnerable populations receive the aid they urgently require.

We urge you to allocate additional resources and mobilize your expertise to alleviate the suffering of the Tigrayan people affected by the hidden drought crisis in Tigray. By working together and coordinating efforts, we can provide the necessary support to help communities build resilience, restore agricultural productivity, and stabilize the region.

Time is of the essence, and we kindly request your immediate attention and cooperation in addressing this humanitarian crisis. We remain available to provide any additional information or collaborate further to ensure an effective response. Together, we have the power to make a tangible difference in the lives of millions of Tigrayans during this challenging time.

Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment to humanitarian assistance. We look forward to a positive and proactive response from your organization.
