Gebremedhin appointed as new head coach of Ethiopia’s national team
The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has appointed Gebremedhin Haile to take the reins of Ethiopia’s national team, known as the Walias, signing him to a one-year contract.
He replaces Coach Webetu Abate, who led the Walias for over two years before departing in April 2023.
An interim coach steered the Walias for their remaining World Cup qualifiers after Abate’s departure. But the EFF has now announced Gebremedhin will serve as the full-time head coach going forward.
Gebremedhin brings experience coaching Ethiopian Insurance club in the domestic Ethiopian Premier League. The respected football figure has also held roles with Ethiopian Defense Forces, Jimma Aba Bunna, Mekelle City, and Sidama Coffee clubs.
In 2016, he served as the interim of the national team following Yohannes Sahle’s dismissal, guiding Ethiopia to a pivotal 2-1 win over Lesotho.
During his tenure with Defense Forces, the team lifted two Ethiopia Cup championships in three finals appearances.
