GSTS expresses Dismay Over UN Secretary-General’s Erasure of the Suffering of Tigray

Global Society of Tigrian Scholars and Professionals issued a statement earlier today denouncing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for what it called “persistent and calculated erasure of the suffering of the people of Tigray.”

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres  faced criticism over his comment that indicated the war in Gaza has claimed more civilians lives than any other war during his tenure.

“We are witnessing a killing of civilians that is unparalleled and unprecedented in any conflict since I have been Secretary General”- UN chief Antonio Guterres said on Monday.

GSTS said that it was part of the UNSG’s persistent effort to ignore the suffering of more than 7 million people in Tigray.

“As UNSG, he has not only failed to galvanize the UN mechanisms in place to address the crisis but has actively collaborated to amplify false narratives propagated by aggressors.” The statement read.

US congressman Brad Sherman also publicly slammed the UN Secretary General on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, the violence in Israel and Gaza is not unparalleled. Not even close. Secretary General Guterres must have a short memory – over 500,000 have died in the conflict in #Tigray and Northern Ethiopia since 2020, the vast majority of which have been civilians.” He wrote on Twitter.

GSTS called on the UNSG to deploy all mechanisms available to ensure the full implementation of the Pretoria CoHA by enforcing the withdrawal of Eritrean and Amhara forces from every parts of Tigray they forcibly occupy.
