Tigray Opposition Salsay Weyane Urges Global Response to Stem Ongoing Exodus of Tigrayan Youth Escaping Regional Hardships

In a weekly press release on Monday, Tigray opposition Salsay Weyane sounded the alarm on the escalating exodus of young Tigrayans fleeing profound hardships in their homeland.

The party said a year into the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the humanitarian crisis in Tigray persists, fueled by intentional policies and an ineffective interim administration in the region.

“Forced to leave behind families and shattered lives in war-ravaged IDP camps and makeshift shelters, these young people represent a stark symbol of the immense suffering in Tigray. Hunger, disease, and the desperate hope for a future beyond the horrors they face fuel their perilous treks across land and sea.” the statement read.

The press release emphasizes the urgent need for global attention to this desperate exodus, asserting that Tigrayans continue to endure what many consider the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, yet their plight remains largely overlooked.

Salsay Weyane urgently calls on the international community, humanitarian agencies, and human rights organizations to take swift and decisive action. Crucial steps include increased aid delivery, diplomatic pressure on the Ethiopian government to uphold the Pretoria Agreement, and accountability for those responsible for the ongoing suffering. The opposition group asserts that ignoring this desperate exodus is no longer an acceptable option.

“We urge the international community, humanitarian agencies, and human rights organizations to act swiftly and decisively. Increased aid delivery, pressure on the Ethiopian government to uphold the Pretoria Agreement, and accountability for those responsible for the ongoing suffering are all crucial steps. Ignoring this desperate exodus is no longer an option.” The statement underscored.

President Getachew Reda warned the international community that time is of the essence on Monday afternoon as he met UNICEF’s delegation led by its Regional Chief for Eastern and Southern Africa Etleva Kadilli.
