Ethiopia: #GERD surpasses electricity generation target in last ten months

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has exceeded expectations in its first ten months of operation, generating more than 2,700 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity with only two turbines. This surpasses the planned target of 2,152.8 GWh for the period by 26%, according to Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).

Tiruwork Shiferau, Head of Planning for EEP’s Power Generation Operations Department, attributes the strong performance to favorable water conditions. “Better water retention allowed the two turbines to operate at full capacity during this timeframe,” she explained.

EEP reports that the dam currently contributes 16% of the nation’s total electricity generation, which stands at 16,900 GWh for the past ten months. Each of the two operational turbines boasts a capacity of 375 megawatts (MW).

Looking ahead, EEP anticipates a substantial increase in the country’s overall generation capacity once the remaining 11 turbines are installed. With all units operational, GERD’s total energy production is expected to reach a staggering 5,150 MW, generating 15,760 GWh annually – an 83% increase in the nation’s annual power output.
