Ethiopia Between Delusions of Grandeur and Harsh Reality
It is Time to Move the African Union Headquarters from Addis Ababa
Ethiopia is gripped by false delusions of grandeur, believing it will become a great power while ignoring that it is merely a ticking time bomb that could explode at any moment due to internal ethnic and national conflicts.
The Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti speaks of Ethiopia’s path to becoming what it describes as the great power of Africa from the headquarters of the African Union in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, claiming that the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam was built with sweat and blood while disregarding the negative impact this project may have on neighboring countries, particularly Egypt and Sudan.
There is a pressing need to seriously consider relocating the African Union headquarters from Ethiopia, a demand primarily driven by Somali and Libyan interests, in light of Ethiopia’s misguided delusions and its state of grandeur.
Ethiopia is no longer a suitable host for this African entity, especially since it supports the division of a member state in the Union, Somalia, through a dubious agreement with the breakaway region of Somaliland aimed at establishing a military base and foothold on the Red Sea coast, not to mention that it is a country threatened by fragmentation and the potential emergence of multiple warring states.
This behavior not only threatens the stability of the region but also reflects Ethiopia’s failure to adhere to the principles of African solidarity, necessitating a reevaluation of its role as the main headquarters of
African Union.
