NEBE revokes TPLF’s legal status for failure comply with regulations

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has officially removed the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) from the legal registry of political parties, citing the party’s failure to comply with corrective directives.

In a press statement today, the NEBE recalled that TPLF had previously been suspended from political activities due to its involvement in rebellious acts. Following the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the party submitted requests on April 21 and May 6, 2023, seeking a review of the board’s decision. However, NEBE rejected the appeal, stating that there was no legal basis for reconsideration.

Under the newly formulated Ethiopian Political Parties Registration and Electoral Ethics Proclamation, TPLF was granted a provisional legal status classified as a “Unique Situation” Despite this, the party failed to fulfill its obligations as outlined in the regulation. NEBE had issued multiple written warnings urging compliance with the law.

After imposing a three-month suspension for corrective action, NEBE officially revoked TPLF’s legal status on May 13, 2025, citing persistent non-compliance.

NEBE further stated that the decision will be communicated to the Ministry of Justice, made public, and enforced through Article 99 of Proclamation No. 1162/2011, which outlines the consequences for the party and its leadership post-deregistration.

The Board emphasized that this marks the final and irreversible termination of the TPLF’s legal status as a political party in Ethiopia.

As of this writing, the TPLF has not issued any official response regarding whether it will take the case to court.
