The Iron man behind IGAD
By Cherinet Alem Harifo
Under the bold and principled leadership of H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, IGAD has stepped into its rightful place as a frontline actor in shaping peace, protecting human rights, and driving development across the Horn of Africa. His leadership has not only elevated the institution, It has redefined what regional cooperation can look like when guided by vision, courage, and consistency.
In the Pretoria Agreement, IGAD was not just present, it was essential. It was under Dr. Workineh’s direct coordination that IGAD became the lead mediator in one of the most sensitive peace processes on the continent. His tireless diplomacy, strategic engagement with both parties, and unwavering insistence on an African-led solution gave the process credibility and results. As he often says, “Africa’s problems demand African solutions anchored in unity, dialogue, and mutual respect.”
The same resolve was carried into Somalia, where Dr. Workineh led shuttle diplomacy that brought federal and regional leaders to the table, not once, but repeatedly. In an environment known for political fragmentation, he fostered dialogue, built trust, and helped establish common ground. These are not theoretical wins: they are tangible results.
Under his leadership, IGAD has not only deepened its work on peace and security but expanded its reach into the social fabric of the region. The IGAD Media Awards, launched under his directive, honor voices of truth, freedom, and accountability across our states. The rights of refugees, women, and youth are no longer peripheral, they are now one core to IGAD’s agenda.
Dr. Workineh’s leadership has moved IGAD from quiet diplomacy to visible impact, from fragmented response to unified action. As he rightly affirms, “IGAD must serve not just governments, but the people of this region, the displaced child, the struggling mother, the silenced journalist, the youth searching for purpose.”
