Global Campaign Demands Return of Tigrian Refugees Before Rainy Season

A global social media campaign and coordinated demonstrations are gaining momentum to demand the unconditional return of Tigrian refugees stranded in Sudan and other internally displaced persons (IDPs) ahead of the upcoming rainy season.

Tsilal – Civil Society of Western Tigray is spearheading peaceful demonstrations this week in both Mekelle and Geneva. The movement calls on the Ethiopian federal government and the international community to act swiftly and decisively to facilitate the safe and dignified return of forcibly displaced people from Western Tigray, in line with the terms of the Pretoria Agreement.

More than five rainy seasons have passed while thousands of Tigrians, uprooted solely because of their identity, remain trapped in camps under dire humanitarian conditions. As the rainy season looms, concerns are mounting over worsening health, security, and survival risks for these displaced communities.

“The time to act is now,” Tsilal leaders stated. “Delaying the return process any further will only deepen the suffering of our people and further erode trust in the peace process.”

The demonstrations aim to galvanize international attention and pressure all relevant stakeholders to prioritize the issue. Organizers are urging Tigrians in Tigray, across Europe, and throughout the diaspora to actively support the campaign, raise their voices, and stand united in advocating for peace, justice, and the right of displaced persons to return home.

“The safe return of our displaced people is not just a humanitarian imperative; it is a core condition for lasting peace,” organizers stressed.

The campaign underscores growing frustrations within the Tigrian community over the slow and uneven implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and the perceived lack of urgency by both national and international actors in resolving the displacement crisis.

Let’s stand together for our displaced people.
