Breaking News: Controversial Figure Alem Gebrewahid Appointed Political Advisor to Tigray’s Interim Vice President
In a move that has sparked widespread public outrage and disbelief, Alem Gebrewahid, a figure long associated with corruption and authoritarianism, has reportedly been appointed as Political Advisor to the Vice President of Tigray’s Interim Regional Administration.
According to internal sources close to the Tigray Interim Administration, General Tadesse Werede, who currently leads the regional government, personally approved Alem Gebrewahid’s appointment a decision many critics say undermines the region’s already fragile political credibility.
A Known Name in Infamy
Alem Gebrewahid, once a senior figure within the TPLF political structure, is widely accused by activists, civil society leaders, and former government officials of deep-seated corruption, abuse of power, and systematic suppression of dissent during his previous tenure. For many Tigrayans, he is synonymous with political manipulation, press censorship, and the silencing of internal reformists.

“The appointment of Alem Gebrewahid is not just tone-deaf it’s a betrayal of everything the people of Tigray have endured and fought for,” said one civil society leader, speaking anonymously due to fear of reprisals.
Public Outcry Mounts
Social media has erupted in criticism following the news, with hashtags like #NoToAlemGebrewahid and #JusticeForTigray trending among the Tigrayan diaspora. Many are questioning the Interim Administration’s commitment to reform, accountability, and inclusive governance.
“This is a man who represents the old guard the very system that helped enable the political decay of Tigray before the war,” said Meron Teklay, a youth activist based in መቐለ. “How can someone like him be rewarded while survivors, refugees, and whistleblowers are still unheard?”
