“Denial is Not an Opinion- It is Complicity. It is the Final Stage of Genocide.”
Genocide Watch, 2022
We, the Tigrayan Advocacy for Human Rights and Justice International, in coordination with theTigray Media Watch Digital Intelligence Taskforce, issue this urgent and unequivocal condemnation of the provocative, dangerous, and internationally criminal genocide-denying statements made by Fetlework Gebregziabher, widely known as Monjorino a former seniorfigure in the now-defunct and outlawed TPLF leadership.
In a recent appearance on TPLF-controlled media, Monjorino shamelessly denied the internationally documented, systematic genocide committed against the people of Tigray. Thisdenial represents a profound betrayal of the memory of over 1.5 million murdered Tigrayans andthe estimated 350,000 Tigrayan women subjected to mass rape and sexual slavery during thegenocidal war on Tigray (2020–2022).
Genocide Denial Is a Crime, Monjorino Is a Genocide Enabler
.
Together with Debretsion Gebremichael and other key TPLF elites, Monjorino bears direct political and moral responsibility for leading Tigray into war, failing to prevent the ensuinggenocide, and now attempting to erase the truth through calculated public disinformation. In a similarly shocking earlier statement, Debretsion Gebremichael publicly denied thatgenocide occurred in Tigray, dismissing the death toll and atrocities as “not true.” These denialsform part of a coordinated narrative of revisionism, clearly intended to distort history, suppressaccountability, and facilitate the return of authoritarian power under the TPLF’s failed leadership.
Genocide Denial: A Violation of International Law
Under international law, genocide denial is more than a moral ofense it is a punishable legalcrime in many jurisdictions and constitutes obstruction of justice in transitional andpost-genocide contexts.
Legal Foundations:
UN General Assembly Resolution 96(I) (1946): Recognizes genocide as an international crime.Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (GenocideConvention, 1948): States must prevent and punish genocide and its incitement, includingdenial that hinders justice.Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (1998): Criminalizes direct and publicincitement to commit genocide and its concealment.Genocide Watch’s Ten Stages of Genocide: Identifies denial as the tenth and final stage, whichoften signals plans for further atrocities.
These legal frameworks establish that denial is not a matter of free speech when it directlythreatens peace, obstructs justice, or revictimizes survivors.
Coordinated Denial Signals a Renewed War Agenda
We sound the alarm: these statements are not isolated. They are part of a wider conspiracy bythe outlawed TPLF faction, led by Monjorino and Debretsion, in collaboration with the genocidalEritrean regime of Isaias Afwerki, to ignite a new war this time targeting the political reformists, the Tigrayan people, and the fragile path to peace.
Our Call to Global Institutions and the Tigrayan PeopleWe urge all moral nations, institutions of law, and Tigrayan civil society to respond swiftly andfirmly.
To the International Criminal Court (ICC):
Initiate preliminary examination and investigation into genocide denial as a form of obstructionof justice by former TPLF leadership.Assess the legal grounds for individual criminal responsibility for statements that incite furtherinstability and whitewash genocide.
To Genocide Watch, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International
Document these statements as part of a dangerous pattern of denial and political revisionism.Support fact-based eforts to counter denialism and protect the historical truth.
To the UN Human Rights Council and Transitional Justice Mechanisms:Recognize these remarks as a threat to peace, truth, and reconciliation in post-genocide Tigray.Advocate for independent documentation, accountability processes, and victim-centered justice.
To the Tigrayan Diaspora, religious institutions, media, youth, and civic leaders:
Publicly condemn genocide denial in all forms.
Defend the legacy and dignity of the victims.
Reject any political resurgence of warlords, deniers, or collaborators with genocidal regimes.
In the Name of the Victims: Silence Is Betrayal
The Tigrayan people endured:
Deliberate starvation as a weapon of warIndiscriminate aerial bombardment of civilians
Systematic sexual violence on a mass scale
Mass killings, forced displacements, and ethnic cleansing
These atrocities are documented in:
The UN OHCHR–Ethiopian Human Rights Commission Joint Investigation Report
Multiple Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reports
First-hand testimonies of survivors, doctors, humanitarian agencies, and forensic investigators
To deny these crimes is to align with the perpetrators. It is a form of ongoing psychological violence against survivors and a mortal attack on justice.
Final Declaration: “Never Again” Means Never Deny
We, the Tigrayan Advocacy for Human Rights and Justice International, declare:
No TPLF oficial who denies genocide can ever again claim moral legitimacy or speak for thepeople of Tigray. We call upon the world and the Tigrayan nation to rise with one voice:
“We will not be silenced.”
“We will not allow truth to be erased.”
“We will not let the enablers of our sufering return in our name.”
Justice Will Prevail Tigray Will Rise
With resolve, we reafirm our commitment to:
Upholding the truth of the Tigray genocide
Pursuing international accountability for all perpetrators and enablers
Defending the soul of Tigray from internal betrayal and external aggression
Let the 1.5 million victims be remembered.
Let their memory be protected from denial.
Let Tigray rise not in the shadows of the past but in the light of truth, dignity, and justice.
