Brother of Southern Tigray Chief Administrator Dies After Assault by Security Forces in Alamata

By Staff Writer

In a deeply tragic turn of events, Eyob Kiros, the younger brother of Haftu Kiros, Chief Administrator of the Southern Tigray Zone, has died following a brutal assault by regional security forces in Alamata, according to eyewitness reports.

Eyob was severely beaten by armed personnel earlier this week and later transferred to Ayder Referral Hospital in Mekelle for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts by medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital.

Eyob Kiros was laid to rest this morning at Jesus Church in Alamata, as a heartbroken community gathered to mourn yet another life lost to injustice. Community members, elders, and civil society leaders denounced what they described as an ongoing pattern of political violence and called for justice.

Chief Administrator Haftu Kiros confirmed the death of his brother in a moving statement posted to his verified Facebook account, writing:

“I lost my brother, but I have not lost hope. The people are beside me. Their love and solidarity give me strength to keep going. Eyob’s death will not be in vain.”

The incident has intensified scrutiny of the actions of the Tigray Interim Administration and its use of force in Southern Tigray. Many view Eyob’s death as part of a broader campaign of intimidation and suppression against the people of Raya, who have recently staged peaceful protests demanding self-governance and protection from external interference.

Eyob Kiros, described by friends as kind, humble, and apolitical, has now become a symbol of the region’s cry for justice and dignity.

Calls are mounting for an independent investigation into the killing, as well as accountability for those responsible.

So far, no official response has been issued by the Tigray Interim Administration.

As Alamata mourns, the voice of a community grows louder demanding truth, accountability, and peace.

May Eyob Kiros’s soul rest in peace.
