Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Welcomed by Ethiopian Officials at 2nd UN Food Systems Summit

Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Temesgen Tiruneh, alongside the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye, officially welcomed President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia upon his arrival in Addis Ababa to participate in the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit.
Co-hosted by the Governments of Ethiopia and Italy, the summit will convene heads of state and government, ministers, UN officials, researchers, youth representatives, civil society organizations, private sector actors, Indigenous Peoples, and producers from around the world. The event runs from July 27 to 29, 2025, in Addis Ababa, bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders committed to transforming global food systems.
The high-level reception reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to regional cooperation and its ongoing role as a host nation for multilateral forums addressing global development challenges, including food security and climate resilience.
The summit aims to accelerate action toward more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient food systems. President Mohamud’s participation underscores Somalia’s interest in forging stronger regional ties and tackling food insecurity a pressing issue in the Horn of Africa due to prolonged droughts and conflict-induced displacements.
In a notable cultural gesture, the Ugandan Vice President arrived in Addis Ababa yesterday to participate in the summit, donning the traditional Ethiopian dress known as the Kemis. This act was warmly received and highlighted the spirit of African unity and mutual respect among the participating nations.

During the welcoming ceremony at Bole International Airport, Ethiopian officials emphasized the importance of collective efforts and regional solidarity in transforming food systems across Africa.
President Mohamud is expected to address the summit during a plenary session and hold bilateral talks with Ethiopian officials and other African leaders on the sidelines of the event.
The 2nd UN Food Systems Summit will focus on innovative solutions, financing for agrifood transformation, and climate-smart agricultural practices, as participants seek to tackle the urgent challenge of global food insecurity.
