The Shabeeley Resort, a transformative tourism and development venture, is taking shape in eastern Ethiopia as part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s national “Gebeta LeHager” initiative. The resort, sprawling across 300 hectares of land showcases the rich culture and architectural heritage of the Somali people.

The landmark Shabeeley Resort Project a flagship development under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s national Gebeta LeHager initiative is entering its final phase, with completion expected in just one and a half months, according to the project’s chief engineer.
The first phase of the project estimated to cost over one billion birr is already well underway. The construction, which began a year and a half ago, is locally driven and fully executed by Ethiopian contractors, using locally sourced materials. The project is supervised by Dr. Abraham Belay and Somali Region Vice President Ibrahim, ensuring high-level oversight and community engagement.

Shabeeley Resort is being built in three phases and features eight traditional-style villages, a hospital center, a presidential unit, a hospitality block, a Somali cultural restaurant, a spa facility with separate services for men and women, and a swimming pool. The houses, constructed using Somali architectural techniques, are designed to stand for nearly 50 years, blending cultural preservation with modern functionality.
Once complete, the resort is expected to become a major tourism destination while also boosting the local economy. So far, it has created hundreds of job opportunities for local residents, reinforcing the Gebeta project’s goal of inclusive development and prosperity.
