Another war is looming over Tigray
By Gebrela Tesfay
I am currently in Mekelle, Tigray. People are very worried and scared.
We are unsure what is going to happen and if our safety will be compromised.
But as we have seen from the past, when ‘leaders’ fight each other it is the uninvolved civilians who pay the highest price.
I see now how the dehumanization of civilians starts in the very beginning of war- there is no one coming to save you, protect you or guide you of where to go and what to do- especially in a country like Ethiopia
It is not so easy to pack up and leave everything behind, especially being almost 9 months pregnant, with a home set up awaiting a baby.
If something does happen to us, I ask you all to speak up for Tigray
In 2020-2022 Ethiopian and Eritrean forces thrived on the silence of the world as they succeeded in killing 1 million people in two years. Still the Tigray Genocide has not gotten the attention it deserves despite it being the worst crisis in the world of our century. & It certainly has gotten no justice.
The internet, electricity, telecommunications in Tigray was turned off during that time by the Ethiopian government so people in Tigray couldn’t reach the world. Even when googling it now, you’ll find downplayed numbers and mixed information of what actually happened here.
Tigray is at risk again of becoming a battlefield, with leaders who care more about power than the safety of the people.
Speaking up matters, there is no wrong in saying #NoToWar
