Dayib Ahmed Nur: A Title Without Leadership, A Legacy of Complicity

Dayib Ahmed Nur, once the Head of Regional Security in the Somali Region and now serving as the Regional Minister of Finance, holds an official title that increasingly appears to be more symbolic than substantive. Despite the weight his positions imply, Dayib has consistently shown a lack of visionary leadership and independent judgment, leaving many to question not only his qualifications, but also the true purpose of his continued presence in government. While leadership demands courage, clarity, and accountability, Dayib’s record tells a different story one marked by silence in the face of injustice and active complicity in tragic events that have deeply scarred the region.

A Dark Chapter: Dawa’alay Massacre

Among the most devastating episodes during Dayib’s tenure was the massacre of civilians in Dawa’alay an atrocity that remains etched in the collective memory of the Somali Region. Though Dayib may not have directly ordered or executed the killings, the chain of command places responsibility squarely on his shoulders. The operation was carried out under the leadership of Mustafe Cagjar and Hussein Kasim, yet Dayib, as a key figure in the security hierarchy at the time, cannot evade accountability. His failure to act, intervene, or even denounce the massacre reveals the stark absence of moral leadership.

The Western Sitti Conflict: Fueling the Flames

Dayib’s involvement in the western Sitti conflict further solidifies his role as an instigator rather than a stabilizer. This conflict, which saw the deaths of both civilians and members of the security forces, was part of a broader scheme to weaken the influence of the Liyu Police. Rather than seeking peaceful resolutions or safeguarding the public, Dayib’s actions or lack thereof exacerbated tensions, deepened divisions, and led to needless bloodshed.Leadership in Name OnlyToday, as Regional Minister of Finance, Dayib Ahmed Nuur holds a post that ostensibly demands strategic thinking, transparency, and service to the public interest. Yet his past undermines any claim to such values. He has become the face of a government that prioritizes titles over talent, presence over principles. His silence in critical moments and willingness to align with those who perpetrate harm expose him as an enabler one whose influence has come at the expense of justice and regional stability.

A Call for Accountability

True leadership is measured not by the power one holds, but by the courage to wield that power for the good of the people. In Dayib’s case, history may not remember him as a leader at all but as a figurehead whose complicity left lasting damage. It is time to confront this legacy, demand accountability, and work toward a future where power is held by those with the integrity and vision to lead.
