Democracy and Social Justice Civil Society Group Condemns Tigray Army’s Statement
Mekelle, Tigray – January 25, 2025 (Tigray Herald)
Voice for Democracy and Social Justice, a Tigray based civil society organization, has strongly condemned a recent statement issued by senior commanders of the Tigray Army on January 23, 2025.
The group criticized the military for asserting itself as an authority over government performance, calling the move a threat to democratic governance and the separation of powers. It also denounced the characterization of media organizations as “instruments of other forces,” describing it as an attack on freedom of expression and public discourse.
Concerns were raised over the consolidation of security forces under a single military command, warning that such centralization undermines civilian institutions, legal frameworks, and the rule of law. The group also condemned inflammatory language in the statement, saying it fuels division and hostility among citizens.
Voice for Democracy and Social Justice called for an immediate end to military interference in politics, urging a recommitment to the rule of law, civilian governance, and respect for human rights. The group emphasized that a democratic Tigray requires strong institutions, open dialogue, and judicial independence.
