FACTS ABOUT SEA ACCESS

By Yonas Biru(Phd)

  1. International laws grant Ethiopia access to see for import and export but not ownership of lands with access to sea.
  2. Ethiopia has no legal ground for land ownership with sea access.
  3. The PM’s position that our neighbors must consider our need for ownership of land with sea access has no legal or moral weight any more than Egypt’s position that Nile is existential for the survival of over 100 million Egyptians and Ethiopia must forego its sovereign rights to its share of the Nile waters.
  4. War is not an option. Ethiopia (home to the AU) cannot breach AU’s Charter that sanctions annexation of land from other member countries as an illegal action. If the World is condemning a Nuclear power for Invading Ukraine, I do not see the world turning a blind eye as one African country invades another to claim land with sea access.
  5. The PM is talking about sea access to divert attention from the economic and political mess he has created. TPLF has made it clear that it will not be a part of such a war. Only a fool will fall for the PM’s ploy.
  6. There are other options such as land swap (but this requires agreement by all parties). If Eritrea or Somalia are not interested in this, it will be dead on arrival.
  7. What Ethiopia needs is a pragmatic solution, not an emotional እከደከድየ. Ethiopia does not need war to keep the boy king in power.
