Ethiopian Airlines to begin mega airport in Nov 2025
Ethiopian Airlines has finalized preparations to start construction of a new mega airport in Bishoftu, 40 km from Addis Ababa, in November 2025, Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew announced.
Speaking to #gazette_plus on the sidelines of the recent Aviation Forum, Mesfin detailed that the new facility will primarily serve international passengers, while Bole International Airport will handle both domestic and international flights until the transition.
“By 2029, when operations fully shift to the new airport, Bole will focus on domestic passengers,” he said, outlining the project’s strategic vision.
The 40 km distance between the airports poses logistical challenges, which Ethiopian Airlines will address by building a railway and road link. This infrastructure will ensure seamless movement for passengers and staff, boosting operational efficiency.
Mesfin noted that the new airport’s location, 400 meters lower in altitude than Bole, will enhance performance and service delivery.
The CEO also emphasized that this new project underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ dedication to improving passenger experiences and operational excellence. He expressed confidence that, upon completion, the Bishoftu airport will rank among leading international hubs, significantly bolstering Ethiopia’s position in global aviation.
