Ethiopia’s Green Vision: Hosting Africa’s Climate Future

By Editor

In September 2025, Ethiopia will host the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), reaffirming its growing leadership in environmental diplomacy and sustainable development. Held in partnership with the African Union from September 8–10 in Addis Ababa, the summit is expected to be a turning point in Africa’s climate trajectory.

Under the theme “Green Talks and Green Actions,” ACS2 will spotlight Nature-Based Solutions as central to Africa’s climate strategy. With the continent facing the disproportionate effects of climate change — from desertification and erratic rainfall to climate-induced displacement the summit emphasizes re-greening the continent through practical, scalable, and community-driven responses.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy Initiative which has seen the planting of over 32 billion seedlings since 2019 will serve as both backdrop and blueprint. As Ethiopia kicks off this year’s planting season, the timing is symbolic. It reflects the country’s effort to turn bold commitments into tangible action.

“The call is clear,” Prime Minister Abiy stated in a recent address. “Invest in nature, scale proven solutions, and embrace a model where ecology drives the economy.”

This message resonates across Africa, where the tension between development and conservation has often stalled progress. Ethiopia’s approach challenges this dichotomy, proposing a new development paradigm in which ecological restoration fosters jobs, food security, water access, and climate resilience.

Yet, the stakes are high. Global climate financing for Africa remains woefully inadequate. At ACS2, African leaders are expected to press for fair access to climate finance, technology transfer, and debt restructuring to enable greener transitions. They will also explore pan-African cooperation on water, forests, and biodiversity areas where cross-border collaboration is essential.

Hosting ACS2 also allows Ethiopia to reassert its diplomatic standing after years of internal conflict. By leading a continental discussion on climate solutions, it positions itself as a bridge between the Global South and North a country rooted in history, but looking toward a green future.

As the Land of Origins prepares to welcome heads of state, scientists, civil society, and youth climate activists, the hope is that the summit will not only inspire bold pledges but ignite a movement. A movement where Africa leads not as a victim of the climate crisis, but as a visionary actor shaping a sustainable future for generations to come.
