Ethiopia’s Violations of International Laws and Continued Enforced Disappearances

Written by Batseba Seifu

Since the 1990s, Eritrean forces have targeted Tigrayans with enforced disappearances, particularly in Irob, Zalambesa, and the Western and Northwestern regions of Tigray. These atrocities have continued unabated, escalating during the genocidal war in Tigray.

Enforced disappearances, abductions, and forced removals have been systematically perpetrated by:

  • Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF)
  • Eritrean Defense Forces (EDF)
  • Fano militia
  • Amhara militia

Despite the Pretoria Agreement, these crimes persist, especially in occupied Tigrayan territories like Irob, Zalambesa, and Western Tigray.

🔴 What’s happening?

  • Tigrayan youths from Shire, Humera, Alamata, and other cities have been abducted by ENDF and Amhara Fano forces under the Abiy Ahmed regime. Many families still have no information about their loved ones’ whereabouts.
  • Tigrayans serving in Ethiopia’s Defense Forces and Federal Police have been forcibly disappeared.
  • Western Tigray continues to see the forced removal and abduction of Tigrayans, taken to the Amhara region by Fano militia.
  • Even abroad, Tigrayans are not safe. In Nairobi, Samson Teklemichael was abducted, with Ethiopian government complicity.

Ethiopia is violating international law, including:

  • The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR): Guarantees the right to life, liberty, and security.
  • The Convention Against Torture: Prohibits inhumane treatment and enforced disappearances.
  • The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights: Ensures dignity, freedom, and security for all.
  • The Geneva Conventions: Prohibits targeting civilians and forced removal during conflict.

We demand accountability and justice for the victims of these atrocities. Silence only emboldens perpetrators.
