The military regime that took control in Tigray has started its rule through fear, intimidating and imprisoning anyone seen as a threat. We are sliding deeper into a dangerous military dictatorship.
So far, the appointed president, Gen. Tadesse Werede, has already broken two major promises made to the international community:
- The new TIRA Cabinet is being filled almost entirely by one notorious TPLF faction, the same group behind the coup, despite hopes for an inclusive administration. This move goes directly against the spirit of the Pretoria Agreement and crushes any hope for democracy, peace, or real progress in Tigray.
- Despite promising to end illegal foreign dealings, such activities are now happening even more openly, led by TPLF and EPLF-aligned activists. This only worsens an already fragile situation.
The international community, especially the UU.S. Embassy Addis Ababaand the EEuropean Union in Ethiopia, must act now. The dangerous developments unfolding in Tigray cannot be ignored.
