Getache Reda has Appointed as advisor on East African Affairs.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed former #Tigray interim president Getachew Reda as his advisor on East African Affairs effective Friday April 11/2025, the Office of the Prime Minister said.
Getachew Reda has now been appointed as #Ethiopia’s Minister Advisor on East African Affairs—effectively making him an indirect #boss to whoever assumes the presidency in Tigray. 🤗
1) He has resisted a powerful and secretive TPLF clique that has dominated Tigray politics for over five decades for its own benefit. That group likely expected him to meet the same fate as past dissenters—ostracized from the party and left with nothing, like Gebru Asrat et al. Instead, Getachew has now found himself in a position of indirect authority over that same TPLF faction. 😁 It’s worth remembering that he still holds significant evidence of criminal conduct in Tigray—and now he has the authority to take action.
2) Despite being overly lenient with them—something that cost him the Tigray presidency and nearly his life—his decision to move to Addis may be the wisest one. Now, as he engages with those same individuals again, I believe he has the potential to dismantle that outdated political circle that has a history of silencing opposition through force. (I’ve been critical of Getachew for placing too much faith in the federal government.)
3) And finally, I only wish he had received this level of support during the early days of his leadership. 🙂 Now that he’s in a stronger position, this new support from multiple sides must continue until Tigray returns its IDPs, regains its full sovereignty, transitions to a democratic system, and prevents the return of that regressive TPLF faction to power. ልዕሊ ኹሉ ግን ድምፂ ጥይት ዘይስመዓላ ሰላማዊት ትግራይ ንኽትህልው። My biggest wish!!
4) Personally, I’ve always opposed the idea of any Tigrayan working with or supporting the genocidal regimes based in Addis Ababa or Asmara. However, due to the failures and regressive nature of the TPLF leadership, the party was left with only two options—Asmara or Addis—with no alternative path. Given this situation, Getachew made the most strategic choice for his political future and ongoing struggle.
Good luck, Getch!! 🤛🏽
