Jigjiga Shines: A Model of Peace-Driven Development in Eastern Ethiopia

By Chekole Alemu

Jigjiga, the vibrant capital of Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State, is emerging as a beacon of progress and transformation in the country’s east. Once known primarily for its strategic location, Jigjiga is now making headlines for its rapid urban development, infrastructure upgrades, and newfound stability heralding a new era of prosperity under regional and federal reformist leadership.

Over the past five years, Jigjiga has undergone a visible transformation, with more than 10 kilometers of modern roads constructed only in the prevous fiscal year, integrating advanced infrastructure such as underground telecommunication and electricity lines, and improved drainage systems. These developments are part of the broader national initiative known as “Corridor Development” (ኮሪደር ልማት), spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, aimed at turning key trade and logistics corridors into engines of economic growth.

Jigjiga, strategically located near Ethiopia’s eastern trade gateways, has become one of the primary beneficiaries of this program. The newly built roads not only beautify the city but also facilitate smoother transportation, enhance commercial activities, and connect Jigjiga more efficiently with surrounding areas and neighboring countries such as Somalia and Djibouti.

At the heart of this transformation is the leadership of Somali Region President Mustafa Mohammed Omer, widely praised for his reformist agenda, commitment to good governance, and focus on peacebuilding. Under his administration, the region has seen significant reductions in inter-communal conflicts, improved federal-regional cooperation, and a renewed emphasis on inclusive development.

“Peace and security have laid the foundation for everything we are witnessing today,” said a resident of Jigjiga. “Five years ago, this was unthinkable. Now, we walk on paved roads, enjoy stable electricity, and see real investment in our future.”

The ongoing infrastructure expansion is also seen as a tool for fostering economic integration and social cohesion in a historically marginalized region. As part of the broader Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, the federal government has prioritized infrastructure as a key pillar for achieving long-term development goals.

A group of journalists, activits and high federal government officials visited Jigjiga.

Jigjiga’s transformation serves as a powerful example of how peace, visionary leadership, and inclusive policies can reshape cities and uplift communities. With continued investment and a commitment to maintaining stability, the city stands poised to become a major hub in eastern Ethiopia linking the country to the Horn of Africa and beyond.

As the sun rises over newly paved streets and the hum of progress echoes through the city, one thing is clear: Jigjiga is shining brighter than evera symbol of what’s possible when peace and development go hand in hand.
