A two-day conference highlighting the role of media and journalism in conflict prevention and peacebuilding in the digital age was held in Jigjiga from July 28 to 29. The event brought together journalists from both public and private media institutions, civil society activists, and high-level officials.

Organized by the Center for Responsible and Peaceful Politics in collaboration with the Hiraad Institute for Public Policy Studies, the conference aimed to promote responsible journalism as a pillar of peace and stability, particularly in Ethiopia’s diverse regions.

In his remarks, Zerihun Teshome, Board Director of the Center for Responsible and Peaceful Politics, emphasized the essential role of the media in fostering dialogue, countering misinformation, and supporting peaceful conflict resolution. “Without a responsible media, there can be no sustainable peace,” Zerihun said.

Somali Regional State President Mustafa Omer welcomed participants to the region and reiterated his administration’s commitment to peace and stability.

“Peace is not only vital for the Somali region, but for Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa as a whole,” he stated, adding that the Somali region is working hard to ensure lasting stability.

The forum was also attended by Federal officials, including Ambassador Dina Mufti, highlighting the national importance of media in peacebuilding efforts.
