National Movement of Amhara (NaMA): An Empire of Lies and a Merchant of Death.
By Ewnetu Smaw
The National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) has once again disgraced itself, exposing its hopeless addiction to lies, hatred, and historical distortion.
Its latest statement is yet another example of its characteristic recklessness—a vile, calculated assault on truth, a betrayal of history, and a cruel mockery of the unimaginable suffering endured by millions. Rather than reckoning with the brutal reality it helped create, NaMA chooses once again to vomit forth the same poisonous lies, reckless fantasies, and cowardly blame-shifting that have already dragged Ethiopia into some of the darkest and most tragic chapters of its existence.
Their words are not just false; they are a dagger twisted in the wounds of a nation still bleeding.A Movement Consumed by Hatred, Lies, Failure and DenialIt is a cruel and heartbreaking distortion of history that NaMA now attempts to scapegoat the TPLF for the profound, long-standing suffering of the Amhara people, akin to the suffering endured by the Tigray, Oromo, and all other nations and nationalities of Ethiopia — a suffering that did not begin in 1991 but is deeply rooted in Ethiopia’s painful and scarred history.
Today, under the disastrous rule of Mr. Abiy Ahmed — with NaMA among the chief actors — that suffering has been driven to even more unbearable depths. Long before the fall of the Derg, the Amhara people endured lives of grinding poverty and abandonment. They were shackled by systemic injustice, stripped of even the most basic human dignities such as healthcare, education, and opportunity.
They were left to rot in forgotten villages, on broken roads that led nowhere, while an indifferent state turned its back on their cries for help. Now, under the current regime, the Amhara people find themselves thrust into an even more desperate and merciless struggle — a battle not for dignity or prosperity, but for sheer survival.
The modest gains they secured during the TPLF/EPRDF era — fragile but real hopes for a better future — have been savagely torn away. Their suffering today is not merely a continuation of the past; it is an intensification, a deepening of wounds that have never been allowed to heal. It was only during the era of the TPLF/EPRDF that the Amhara people, like all other peoples of Ethiopia, finally began to see tangible improvements in their lives — through expanded access to schools, healthcare services, roads, and meaningful opportunities for development. Yet the NaMA, willfully blind to this truth, stubbornly refuses to acknowledge any of it.
Trapped in its own bankrupt and blood-stained ideology, it clings to the tired, dishonest narrative of portraying the TPLF as the eternal enemy of the Amhara people — a narrative that serves only to mask its own staggering political failure and moral bankruptcy. The suffering that the Amhara people endure today is not the result of some imagined conspiracy hatched in Mekelle; it is the bitter fruit of the NaMA’s betrayal of reason, of peace, and of the very principles of human decency.
In its refusal to learn from its shameful history, the NaMA has condemned its own people to renewed cycles of violence, fear, and despair — a tragedy all the more heartbreaking because it is, ultimately, self-inflicted.Perpetuating Sick Propaganda While Hiding the TruthFew things are more devastating to a wounded nation than the deliberate mutilation of truth. It is with profound sorrow that we witness the NaMA shamelessly peddling a grotesque falsehood — accusing the TPLF of crimes it did not commit against the Amhara people.
This is not merely a distortion of history; it is a moral assault on a people who deserve healing, not further manipulation. The irony is bitter: while many Amhara elites once loudly denied the existence of an “Amhara ethnic group,” dismissing it as fabrication or irrelevance, it was the TPLF that, against fierce opposition, enshrined the Amhara people’s existence, rights, and dignity in Ethiopia’s constitution.
At a time when 1these elites rejected their own people’s distinctiveness for political or ideological convenience, the TPLF affirmed a simple truth — that the Amhara, like all peoples, deserved recognition, protection, and a rightful place within Ethiopia’s diverse fabric. The NaMA, tragically, adheres to a worldview that is fundamentally opposed to the core values of equality and justice.
Rather than embracing fairness, they are consumed by outdated politics rooted in a toxic bravado that only deepens division and fuels discord. Their vision is fueled by a warped sense of power—one that seeks to dominate, silence, and oppress, rather than uplift, empower, and heal. This approach not only tramples on the inherent dignity of every individual but also erodes the very foundationof a just society, where every voice deserves to be heard, and all people deserve to be treated with equal respect.
The bitter irony is that their stubborn attachment to these discredited, regressive practices only entrenches injustice and inequality, driving Ethiopians even further away from the unity and collective progress they so desperately need.NaMA lacks the guts to confront the true perpetrators of the suffering endured by the Amhara people and to acknowledge the crimes committed and the devastating destruction caused by the PP government.
In its statement, it shamefully failed to mention the root cause of the ongoing conflict in Amhara. Instead, it deliberately chose to remain silent. Rather than facing the harsh reality, it irresponsibly shifted blame onto the TPLF with baseless and unfounded accusations. Its focus was not on the heartwrenching impact of the war, or the lives torn apart by it, but instead on an unjust claim to Tigray’s invaded and occupied territories—a claim unsupported by both history and the constitution.
NaMA irrationally asserts that these areas belong to the Amhara region, even though this region did not exist prior to the 1995 constitution. The irony is bitter: while many Amhara elites once loudly denied the existence of an “Amhara ethnic group,” dismissing it as fabrication or irrelevance, it was the TPLF that, against fierce opposition, enshrined the Amhara people’s existence, rights, and dignity in Ethiopia’s constitutional order.
At a time when these elites rejected their own people’s distinctiveness for political or ideological convenience, the TPLF affirmed a simple truth — that the Amhara, like all peoples, deserved recognition, protection, and a rightful place within Ethiopia’s diverse fabric.
The historical record, despite its complexities, is clear: it was the TPLF/EPRDF that recognized the Amhara constitutionally, codified their rights, and sought to shield them under the law — an inclusive act meant to build unity, not to invite slander. How tragic, then, that those who once denied the Amhara identity now posture as its fiercest defenders — not through truth or justice, but through the reckless weaponization of lies and hatred.
In doing so, they betray their own past denials and deepen the wounds of a community yearning for dignity and healing.Yet today, the NaMA desecrates this legacy. In betraying the very people they claim to champion, they have abandoned the path of truth and dignity, choosing instead to fan the flames of ethnic hatred. Rather than uplifting the Amhara through honest engagement, they mire them deeper in despair, fueling resentment and stripping away the possibilities for justice and reconciliation.
It is a deeply saddening spectacle: a movement so consumed by bitterness that it would rather burn the bridges built for its protection than walk them toward a better future.Accomplice in Ethiopia’s BetrayalIt is nothing short of a tragic and grotesque irony for the NaMA to now accuse Eritrea, when they themselves were the ones who openly welcomed, commended, and supported Mr.
Abiy Ahmed in inviting Eritrea to join his genocidal war against the Tigrayan people. The NaMA applauded and stood by a regime that allied with foreign invaders to commit unspeakable atrocities, reducing Tigray to a battlefield of death and despair. NaMA’s bitter anger today — that the TPLF refuses to bow to their malicious desires by seeking revenge or waging war against Eritrea — exposes more of its true, dark intentions.
The NaMA’s support and intention in facilitating Eritrean forces to invade Tigray was not only to orchestrate mass 2slaughter and ensure the utter destruction of the Tigrayan people but also to foster such deep enmity to the extent that any hope for reconciliation between the people of Tigray and Eritrea would be obliterated forever.
These were never just the wishes of the NaMA; they mirrored the destructive aims of Abiy Ahmed, whose vision was nothing short of the annihilation of the soul of Tigray itself. In the face of such ill-fated schemes and unfathomable atrocities, however, it is thanks to the TPLF and the TDF that hope has not been completely extinguished.
Despite the unparalleled suffering, they have guided the people of Tigray to rise above the darkness, to breathe deeply, and to call for peace with all peoples — including Eritrea. This call for peace, made despite the genocidal horrors inflicted upon them, is an act of extraordinary courage, moral clarity, and strength. It is a rejection of the cycle of vengeance and a steadfast commitment to healing — a vision that the NaMA, with their blood-stained hands, could never even begin to understand.
Thanks also to the people of Tigray for showing resilience, patience and longsightedness. Otherwise, NaMA equally betrayed Ethiopia by supporting the government of Mr. Abiy Ahmed. This was not only a betrayal of the people of Tigray; it was a betrayal of Ethiopia’s future, driven by a brutal agenda that sought to erase an entire culture, history, and identity.
Major Architects of Ethiopia’s Humanitarian CatastropheThe NaMA, one of the major architects of Ethiopia’s ongoing humanitarian disaster, now shamelessly plays the victim, crying foul and pointing fingers as it always does. This group’s role in plunging Ethiopia into the abyss of catastrophe cannot be ignored, particularly when it comes to the genocide committed in Tigray and the horrific suffering faced by the Amhara people.
The consequences of the NaMA’s reckless and divisive politics are impossible to deny:● Millions of lives were lost in a brutal and inhumane manner, with countless individuals subjected to unimaginable suffering and violence. The atrocities committed left deep scars on the affected communities, as families were torn apart and entire populations were subjected to horrific acts.
The scale of the devastation is beyond comprehension, marking a dark chapter in history that will never be forgotten.● Millions have been forcibly uprooted from their homes and communities, driven into displacement as their lives were shattered beyond recognition. Families who once lived in safety and stability now find themselves scattered, struggling to survive in unfamiliar and often hostile environments.
The trauma of losing not only their homes but also their sense of identity and belonging has left deep emotional and psychological scars. With no place to call home and no certainty about the future, these individuals face overwhelming challenges as they try to rebuild their lives from the ruins of their former existence.
The profound loss of stability and security is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of conflict and violence.● Schools and hospitals, once cherished pillars of hope and support within the community, now lie in ruins, their shattered walls standing as a haunting reminder of all that has been lost. The classrooms, where children once dreamed of bright futures, are now empty, their desks overturned and broken, echoing with silence where laughter and learning once thrived.
Hospitals, which once offered healing and comfort, have been reduced to rubble, leaving countless families without access to the care they desperately need. The devastation is not only physical, but emotional—a cruel blow to the very foundations that once provided stability, education, and health.
The destruction of these vital institutions has left an irreplaceable void, leaving entire generations without the hope of knowledge or the promise of healing. An economy, once struggling but still standing, is now in freefall.● Ethnic conflicts rage relentlessly, consuming the land with an unyielding fury, tearing at the very fabric of the nation.
Communities that once coexisted in relative harmony are now divided, their bonds shattered by hatred, mistrust, and violence. Families are torn apart, lives lost in senseless brutality, and the hope for peace seems like a distant dream. The relentless cycle of violence shows 3no sign of abating, as each day brings new suffering, new wounds, and new heartbreak.
The nation, once united in its diversity, now finds itself fractured, its future uncertain, as the ghosts of past injustices continue to haunt its people. The absence of resolution leaves a heavy, suffocating weight on the hearts of all who yearn for peace, and the scars left by these conflicts may never fully heal.●
It is a heartbreaking reality that millions of children are being denied the opportunity to attend school, a fundamental right that should be the cornerstone of every child’s future. Instead of stepping into classrooms filled with possibility, they are trapped in a cycle of poverty and ignorance, their potential stifled by circumstances beyond their control.
Tragically, many of these children, particularly girls, have been forced into early marriages, a cruel fate that strips them of their innocence and their future. These young girls, some still barely beyond childhood themselves, are thrust into roles they are not equipped to bear—burdened with the weight of responsibilities that should never be theirs to carry.
The loss of their childhood dreams, the loss of their right to education, and the loss of their agency as individuals is not only a personal tragedy but a collective one, for it robs society of the immense potential these children could have contributed. It is a sorrowful reminder of how, for too many, the promise of a better life remains just that—a promise never realized.
This utter collapse didn’t simply appear out of nowhere. It was carefully engineered by the destructive, hate-fueled politics of groups like the NaMA, who have sown division and chaos without any regard for the people they claim to represent.Even now, as Ethiopia bleeds, the NaMA continues to peddle dangerous and malicious lies.
It accuses the TPLF of crimes it had no hand in, while blatantly ignoring the truth: that Tigray endured an unimaginable hell — mass starvation, brutal slaughter, and utter devastation. The NaMA’s obsessive fixation on the TPLF is not political maneuvering; it’s political suicide. Their relentless scapegoating only deepens the misery of the Amhara people, isolating them further, and driving them deeper into a pit of suffering that they themselves helped create.
Final Word The NaMA is neither a victim nor a savior. It is a reckless, disgraced movement — addicted to lies, drunk on war, and hellbent on dragging Ethiopia to the brink of total collapse. It thrives on hatred, fuels division, and treats the suffering of millions as mere collateral damage in its mad quest for power.
If the NaMA is allowed to continue poisoning Ethiopia’s future with its web of false accusations, its endless manufacture of enemies, and its shameless alliances with traitors, it will be forever remembered — not as a defender of a people, but as one of the chief architects of Ethiopia’s disintegration and betrayal.
The choice before us could not be clearer: Reject the politics of hate. Reject the NaMA’s deadly lies. Choose the truth. Choose peace. Choose survival — before the last threads holding the nation together are violently torn apart. History is watching. And it will not be kind to those who stood on the side of lies and destruction.
