Norwegian Government, have officially launched Phase 5 (2025–2029) of the Joint Programme to End Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Norwegian Church Aid Ethiopia and Save the Children International, with generous support from the Norwegian Government, have officially launched Phase 5 (2025–2029) of the Joint Programme to End Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child, Early, and Forced Marriage (CEFM) in Ethiopia.

This new phase will be implemented in 20 districts across five regions: Afar, Somali, Sidama, Amhara, and Oromia, with a renewed commitment to the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of Ethiopian girls and women. The programme aims to reach 118,500 people directly and 4.3 million indirectly.

At a launch event held today, H.E. Ergoge Tesfaye (PhD), Minister of Women and Social Affairs, reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to the Joint Programme. She highlighted the extension as a sign of shared commitment to protecting the rights, health, and future of girls and women in Ethiopia. The Ministry, she noted, will fully support the implementation of this phase with urgency.

H.E. Stian Christensen, Ambassador of Norway to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia & Permanent Representative to the African Union, noted that addressing FGM and CEFM is about ensuring equal opportunities for all members of society. “Together, I believe we are making significant progress toward a future where every girl and woman is free from FGM and CEFM.”

Norwegian Church Aid and Save the Children would like to acknowledge our partners, including the Royal Norwegian Embassy and Norad – Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, for a continued cooperation to end female genital mutilation and child, early, and forced marriage.
