Salsay Weyane Tigray Commends U.S. Ambassador’s Call for Peace, Urges Concrete Action for Lasting Resolution in Tigray

Salsay Weyane Tigray welcomes last week’s statement from the U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, which calls on the Ethiopian government and other forces to end conflicts and cease violence against citizens. We deem this statement commendable.

However, meaningful peace can only be achieved when the previous cessation of conflict with Tigray is followed by a peaceful resolution to the very causes that ignited the conflict. As of today, Tigray remains far from embarking on a path that leads to positive peace. The mere absence of active hostilities does not bring genuine peace unless and until stakeholders, particularly the United to exert pressure on the Government of Ethiopia to fulfill its commitments.

The withdrawal of external forces from Tigray and the safe and prompt return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees remain critical responsibilities that have been overlooked by the government and, regrettably, ignored by observers of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA).

Salsay Weyane Tigray wishes to bring to His Excellency, the Ambassador’s attention the fragile peace condition in Tigray, which continues to perpetuate the suffering of millions, including those displaced and living in temporary shelters both within Tigray and in Sudan.

We urge all stakeholders to give renewed and serious attention to the profound challenges facing our people and to work towards achieving a sustainable peace in the region.
