Sidi Ould Tah Elected Ninth President of the African Development Bank Group
A Mauritanian Sidi Ould Tah has been elected as the ninth President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, marking a new chapter in the leadership of one of Africa’s most prominent financial institutions.
His election was confirmed by the Board of Governors of the Bank Group a body composed of finance and economy ministers or central bank governors from the Bank’s 81 regional and non-regional member countries. The Board serves as the highest decision-making authority within the institution.
Tah is set to assume office on 1 September 2025, succeeding Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, whose second five-year term will conclude later this year. The incoming president brings extensive experience in economic development and African financial systems, and his appointment signals a continued commitment to accelerating the continent’s growth and integration into the global economy.
As the AfDB faces increasing responsibility in navigating Africa’s challenges from climate finance and energy transition to digital transformation and infrastructure expectations are high for Tah’s leadership to steer the Bank toward impactful, inclusive development.
