Southern Tigray Zonal Administration Returns to Office Amid Cheers in Maichew
By Staff Writer
In a historic moment for Southern Tigray, Haftu Kiros and his zonal cabinet triumphantly returned to their official posts in Maichew today, greeted by a massive and jubilant crowd. Locals filled the streets, waving flags, singing traditional songs, and chanting messages of support as the rightful zonal administrators reclaimed their offices with what many are calling “honour and grace.”
The return follows weeks of intense public resistance against what residents described as an unconstitutional military-backed removal of the elected Southern Tigray Zonal Administration by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The people of Raya, known for their resilience and deep-rooted values of justice, maintained that “the true struggle of the people always wins.”
Haftu Kiros, visibly moved by the overwhelming welcome, addressed supporters briefly from the town square. “This is not a personal victory, but a people’s victory. Raya has spoken peacefully, powerfully, and united.”
Shortly after their arrival, President Tadese Werede of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration also arrived in Maichew and held a closed-door meeting with the reinstated zonal leadership at Tadele Hotel. According to local sources, the discussions focused on stabilizing governance in the zone, ensuring administrative continuity, and addressing recent grievances.
Tomorrow, President Tadese is expected to meet openly with Raya’s residents and the Southern Zone leadership to hear directly from the people, in what could mark a turning point for renewed trust and dialogue between the regional government and the zone.
The peaceful reinstatement of the administration is being celebrated not only as a political win but also as a powerful symbol of the people’s ability to protect their democratic will without violence.
The events in Raya are likely to have a ripple effect across the region, reinforcing the importance of local autonomy, constitutional governance, and the unbreakable bond between leaders and the communities they serve.
