Southern Zone Delegation Travels to Mekelle to Meet President Tadesse Werede Over Leadership Purge
By Staff Writer
A high-level delegation comprising respected elders, women, youth representatives, and religious leaders from Tigray’s Southern Zone has arrived in Mekelle to meet with Regional President Tadesse Werede. The visit comes amid growing outrage over what the delegation calls the unlawful and forceful removal of the zone’s entire leadership.
The group, representing a wide spectrum of Southern Tigray society, condemned the leadership overhaul as a “militarized intervention” that bypassed public input and ignored democratic procedures. According to sources, all local administrative heads in the Southern Zone were dismissed and replaced under pressure without community consultation or legal due process.

“This is not reform it’s a coup against the people’s will,” said one elder in the delegation. “We came to Mekelle to express our deep frustration and to demand justice. Such actions threaten peace and self-governance.”
Tensions have been escalating across the Southern Zone in recent weeks, with residents accusing the Tigray Interim Administration of targeting community-supported leaders and weakening local governance structures. The delegation aims to press President Tadesse Werede to reverse the dismissals and reinstate the previous leadership.
Observers say the incident highlights growing cracks within the Interim Administration and raises broader concerns about post-war democratic transition, transparency, and respect for local autonomy in Tigray.

Meetings between the delegation and regional officials are expected to continue over the coming days.
