The Rise of a New Political Generation | The Fall of TPLF’s Authoritarian Legacy

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – April 2025
In a historic diplomatic initiative, the Tigray Interim Assembly Council has embarked on a bold and wide-ranging engagement campaign with key representatives from the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other Western diplomatic missions. This high-level engagement signals a paradigm shift in Tigray’s post-genocide national interest strategy and its emerging role as a
principled and constructive regional actor.

Led by an inclusive delegation of all Tigrayan members of the Interim Assembly—many of
whom represent Tigray’s new and diverse political parties—this initiative breaks with the region’s one-party past and affirms a commitment to democratic governance, pluralism, and international partnership.
Strategic talks were held in Addis Ababa, with focused discussions on post-conflict
reconstruction, peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, democratic transitions, and long-term institutional resilience.

Key Strategic Priorities Discussed

  1. Tigray’s National Interest in a Shifting Geopolitical Landscape

The Council presented Tigray’s vision as a stabilizing force in the Horn of Africa, advocating cooperative diplomacy, peaceful coexistence, and alignment with international principles of human rights, democracy, and multilateralism.

  1. Strengthening Transitional Institution Partners acknowledged the growing political maturity of the Tigray Interim Assembly and
Provisional Administration. Support was voiced for enhancing institutional frameworks to foster
    good governance, transparency, and accountability.
  2. Full Implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement

Discussions emphasized the urgent need for the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs),withdrawal of foreign and non-state forces—including Eritrean troops—and restoration of Tigray’s territorial integrity. The Council called for increased international monitoring and enforcement of the Agreement’s provisions.

  1. Laying the Groundwork for Democratic Elections

The Council outlined a clear roadmap toward free, fair, and internationally observed elections as the cornerstone of Tigray’s post-genocide recovery. These elections will provide legitimacy, public confidence, and a peaceful transition to long-term democratic rule.

A Milestone in Multilateral Diplomacy
In a second round of engagements, the Council held constructive consultations with senior envoys from the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, Italy, Sweden, Norway,Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

These discussions reflect growing international consensus that Tigray’s recovery,
reconstruction, and democratic transition deserve global solidarity. They also mark a symbolic turning point—the global community increasingly embraces the new political generation, leaving behind the failed authoritarian legacies of the past.

Strategic Outlook: Sustained Diplomatic Momentum

The Council’s diplomatic campaign will continue with targeted outreach to:
International Human Rights Institutions
The African Union (AU) Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)
The Israeli Embassy in Ethiopi Middle East Diplomatic Missions in Addis Ababa
These engagements aim to solidify Tigray’s long-term position as a peaceful, rights-based, and geopolitically strategic partner in the Horn of Africa.

A National Moment of Unity and Recognition
Across Tigray and beyond, the Council’s leadership has been met with admiration and pride. Their collective efforts—free from partisan loyalties—are setting a new standard in post-conflict diplomacy and political ethics.

“You are the embodiment of a dignified and resilient Tigray—serving not for party, but for people; not for power, but for purpose. The people of Tigray are proud of you.”
This is more than diplomacy—it is a national awakening. A new generation has emerged,

committed to building a future of peace, justice, and international legitimacy.
