Tigray at a Critical Juncture: War, Oppression, or a Just Future?

Tigray stands at a crossroads. The choices made now will determine whether it slides back into war and destruction, falls under authoritarian rule and oppression, or embarks on an inclusive path that benefits all.

Abiy’s strategy of keeping Tigray in desperation to secure political leverage risks plunging Tigray into renewed conflict. Meanwhile, the TPLF-ADM faction seeks to consolidate power, silencing opposition instead of fostering dialogue. But there is another way.

Tigray has a historic opportunity to lead by example. By fostering inclusive dialogue—where Tigrayans collectively define their challenges and chart their future—Tigray can set the stage for a better future for the whole region.

Critical junctures define the future. As Acemoglu’s research shows(recent Nobel Prize winner), moments of crisis amplify small institutional choices into long-term trajectories. If Tigray embraces inclusivity and rule of law now, it can break free from cycles of oppression and conflict. It risks repeating history’s worst mistakes if it chooses authoritarianism or war. Tigray means Tegaru, let us choose inclusivity for our very own survival.

The TDF generals have a moral duty to preserve peace, not gamble with the people’s lives. History will judge those who betray this responsibility. The time to choose is now.
