Tigrayan Suffering Imperiled by Regional Tensions – Urgent Action Required
Salsay Weyane Tigray expresses grave concern that the escalating regional tensions in the Horn of Africa are dangerously obscuring the acute suffering of Tigrayan internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees. We emphasize that addressing this humanitarian catastrophe must be considered an integral and urgent component of any strategy aimed at preventing further conflict.
The persistent occupation of Tigrayan territories by Eritrean forces and militias supported by the Ethiopian government represents a blatant violation of the peace agreement. This ongoing breach of commitments directly threatens the fragile stability of the region and perpetuates the immense hardship endured by the people of Tigray. We are deeply alarmed that those who profit from conflict may seize upon this non-compliance as an opportunity to reignite violence, the devastating consequences of which will be disproportionately borne by the already traumatized Tigrayan population.
Therefore, we urgently call upon all concerned international bodies, humanitarian organizations, and diplomatic actors to exert maximum pressure on all parties to achieve lasting peace and alleviate the suffering of Tigrayans, immediate and unconditional withdrawal of occupying forces followed by safe and dignified return of all IDPs and refugees, urgent delivery of comprehensive humanitarian aid, establishment of accountability for atrocities, and active support for sustainable peacebuilding initiatives are essential.
The international community must recognize that the suffering of the Tigrayan people is inextricably linked to the broader security landscape of the Horn of Africa. Failure to address this crisis with decisive action will not only exacerbate human suffering but also contribute to the destabilization of the entire region.
