To Those in Power Who Have Forgotten Their People

By Almaz D zewde

The youth of Tigray—the future of our nation—are vanishing in the sea, desperate for a life they can no longer find at home. They are not running toward luxury; they are running from hopelessness. From empty schools, from shattered dreams, from a land that once held so much promise but now offers nothing but pain.

You fight for power while your people fight for survival. You sit in meetings and debates while the mothers of Tigray bury their children—not from war alone, but from starvation, despair, and exile. Instead of building a future, you are watching a generation disappear.

Power means nothing if the people you claim to lead are perishing. What is the purpose of governance if there is no one left to govern? Tigray does not need leaders who serve their own interests—it needs leaders who serve the people. Who fight for justice, for education, for jobs, for dignity. Who ensure that no young person feels that drowning in an ocean is their only path to a better life.

History will remember what you did—or failed to do. The question is, will you stand for your people, or will you be remembered as the ones who let them fade away?

The time for excuses is over. Act now. Fight for Tigray, not for power.

My heart continues to bleed 😭😭
