TPLF Faction led by Debretsion Gebremichael claims control of Adigrat administration
A faction of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front led by Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) has taken control of the local administration in Adigrat, Eastern Tigray further escalating tensions in the region.
Today the faction announced on the party’s official page that Redae Gebregziabher has assumed leadership of the administration office, which was previously under officials appointed by the Interim Administration.
On March 8, 2025 the Interim Administration warned that the faction led by Debretsion Gebremichael is preparing to forcibly take over local administrations in the South, Southeastern, and Eastern zones of Tigray, as well as the regional capital, Mekelle, with support from elements within the military.
Residents of Adigrat told Wegahta that armed men affiliated with the TDF were involved in the administration takeover.
“It was not a violent coup, but it was clear that the military presence was not incidental,” A resident of Adigrat who requested anonymity told Wegahta.
The situation has sparked concerns among residents, with some fearing that this could lead to renewed conflict.
The rift within the TPLF factions led by Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) and President Getachew Reda has escalated since senior military commanders of the TDF announced their decision to dissolve and restructure the interim administration.
“People are worried about what comes next,” A bajaj driver in Adigrat told Wegahta. “We don’t want another war.”
Whether this will lead to further fragmentation opening doors for external intervention or potential negotiations remains uncertain however many in Tigray grappling with frustration over what awaits ahead.
