TPLF Condemns Ethiopian Government’s “Unilateral Actions”, Calls for Full Implementation of Peace Agreement

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front leadership, led by chairperson Debrestion Gebremichael, issued a statement on Wednesday condemning what it describes as unilateral decisions and violations of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) by the Ethiopian government. The statement comes in response to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s call for the people of Tigray to nominate a president for the Interim Government via email—an action the TPLF asserts directly contradicts the terms of the Pretoria Agreement.

According to the statement, Tigray has “borne injustices it should never have endured” while working to implement the peace deal, yet the Ethiopian government continues to impose new terms and engage in “acts of sabotage that undermine peace and progress.” The TPLF highlights concerns over the delayed establishment of an elected government in Tigray, attributing the setback to “deliberate efforts to manufacture political crises.”

The TPLF further accuses the federal government of violating Article 3 of the CoHA, which prohibits hostile actions, including propaganda and destabilization efforts. It claims that Addis Ababa has mobilized proxies against Tigray, restricted essential supplies such as fuel, and obstructed life-saving humanitarian efforts—actions it says “gamble with the lives and livelihoods of the people of Tigray” and constitute breaches of international law.

The party office asserts that the Interim administration was established through dialogue under Article 10 of the CoHA and is not subject to unilateral federal decisions. The statement reveals that following discussions on the performance of the current Interim Administration, the TPLF’s Central Committee nominated General Tadesse Werede as its candidate for the presidency—a choice it says was initially accepted by the Ethiopian government. However, the federal government later announced a public call for nominations, claiming sole authority over the appointment, a move the TPLF deems “unacceptable.”

The developments mark a new escalation in tensions between the TPLF and the Ethiopian government, raising questions about the future of the peace process and governance in Tigray.

TPLF called for the full implementation of the CoHA, including the liberation of occupied territories, the return of displaced persons, justice and accountability, and preparations for an elected government in Tigray. The statement urges the Ethiopian government to “prioritize actions and decisions that foster sustainable peace” rather than pursuing “destabilizing activities that harm the people.”
