TPLF Urges Urgent AU Intervention Over NEBE’s Decision Warning Threat to Pretoria Agreement

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has issued a formal letter to H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf, Chair of the African Union’s High-Level Panel on Ethiopia, expressing deep concern over the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia’s (NEBE) recent decision to revoke its legal status. TPLF warns that this action poses a direct threat to the integrity and viability of the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the two-year war in Tigray.

In the letter wrote by its chair, TPLF stressed that while the Pretoria Agreement successfully halted hostilities, its broader aim was to establish a foundation for sustainable peace by addressing the root causes of the conflict. The group contends that the NEBE’s move, which designates TPLF as an “illegal political party,” represents a breach of the agreement’s central provisions—particularly Articles 3(c), 3(d), and 10, which commit all parties to mutual recognition.

TPLF accused the Federal Government of Ethiopia of reframing a fundamentally political dispute as a legal and administrative matter to justify NEBE’s action. It described this as a violation not only of the Pretoria Agreement but also of Articles 6(c) and 7(1)(a–d) of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) Protocol, which empower the Council to mediate conflicts and uphold peace accords.

According to TPLF, its status was restored through the Pretoria Agreement and cannot be revoked without undermining the peace process. The organization reiterated its commitment to dialogue and called for political, not unilateral, resolutions to differences in the interpretation and implementation of the agreement.
