TPLF was fighting in Tigrai not for Tigrai

By Abreha Belai.

After I wrote that Merci’eh Kidan’s blaming Ethiopia as genocidal to Tigrai was wrong, Merci’eh has invited me to a live debate on Axumawian Media Network.

And I say, “I’d love too.”

And I will say it again: The greatest threat to the survival of Tigrai came from nowhere but the sleeping cell of Shabiya, and that is the masked mercenary group of Meles/Sebhat then, and the Debretsion/Monjorino crime syndicate now.

Shabia would have been thrown into the dustbin of history by the sword of the Ethiopian armed forces whether during the Derg (1974-1991), or later during the 1998-2000 War, if it were not for Meles Zenawi, an ultra Eritrean nationalist in a Tigraian garb.

Meles, who used to identify himself as an Eritrean when he was a student at Wingate High School in Addis in the early ’70s, was smart enough that instead of joining Shabia and die as a foot soldier in Sahel desert, he and many others like him saw great opportunities if they joined TPLF as “Tigraians” until their dreams came true.

Once in TPLF leadership, Meles started out by using Tigraian youths as cannon fodders to rescue Shabia from an Ethiopian onslaught, secure the independence of Eritrea, and control state power in Ethiopia in the event of the downfall of the Mengistu regime.

Remember: I’m a journalist and not a historian. I’ve neither the interest nor the details to roll back into history and narrate Wolle did that, Menelik did this. The so-called 17-year struggle was meant to right the wrongs of history. Did it? Never. It was a grand deception.

The naked truth is TPLF was fighting in Tigrai not for Tigrai but as an extended arm of Shabia! Crimes in history will undoubtedly pale in the face of the crimes TPLF committed during the last 50 years against the people of Tigrai in particular and the Ethiopian people in general.

The recent genocide Shabia committed in Tigrai was, by other means, Meles Zenawi’s gift for Tigrai via Shabia.
