U.S. Ambassador Urges Immediate Return of Displaced People in Tigray

U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, has underscored that the only sustainable solution to the humanitarian crisis in Tigray is the immediate return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes.

During a visit to the Shire May Dumu IDP shelter, Ambassador Massinga witnessed firsthand the suffering of displaced communities. While reaffirming continued U.S. humanitarian support, he emphasized that aid alone is not a long-term solution.

“The displaced people themselves have voiced a clear desire to return home and resume their lives,” he said.

Ambassador Massinga also held discussions with officials from the Tigray Interim Administration and the TPLF, focusing on facilitating the safe and dignified return of IDPs and accelerating the implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.

Deputy President of the Tigray Interim Administration, Amanuel Assefa, confirmed that the return of displaced persons was at the center of the discussions.

He stressed that while repatriation remains the most viable solution, many IDPs continue to face acute shortages of food and essential aid — leading to preventable deaths from hunger.
