Unlocking the Future: Ethiopia’s Fayda System Fuels Massive Growth.
Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed officially opened the ID4Africa 2025 Annual Summit today, highlighting Ethiopia’s transformative progress in digital governance through its national digital ID platform, Fayda.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister announced that the Fayda system has enabled over 9.6 trillion birr to circulate via digital transactions, marking a major leap in Ethiopia’s efforts to formalize and modernize its economy.
“Digital identity empowers individuals and creates an inclusive, secure ecosystem for nations in the digital age,” Dr. Abiy said. “Fayda is not just a card it is a trusted system designed to protect privacy, streamline services, and unlock digital potential for millions.”
He emphasized that Ethiopia’s legacy identity system was fragmented and excluded many, particularly vulnerable populations. With Fayda, the government aims to deliver essential services like finance, healthcare, and education more effectively and equitably.
The platform assigns a unique and secure ID number to individuals while protecting personal data and sharing only what’s necessary. Fayda’s rollout is part of Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation strategy and is gaining international attention for its scale and impact.
Dr. Abiy stressed the importance of measuring the impact of digital ID systems not just in numbers but by how they transform lives. He called for increased cooperation across Africa to ensure digital systems remain inclusive, secure, and interoperable.
