Visit Tigrai: The cradle of Civilisation

Slasie Chelkot, also known as Chelekot, is a village in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia, located about 17 kilometers south of Mek’ele. Here’s a brief overview of its historical background, architecture, heritage, environment, and tourism significances.

Chelekot has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century. It was once the seat of Ras Woldeselassie, a powerful ruler of Enderta1. The village is mentioned in a charter from 1794 when Emperor Tekle Giyorgis made a grant to the Meqdese Selassie Church in the village. Ras Wolde Selassie built a palace, houses for his wives, and the Chelekot Selassie Church in the village.

The Chelekot Selassie Church is an architecturally impressive example of the circular Tikul styles of paintings and is covered in beautiful 19th-century paintings. The church has a round shape with three main doors and nine beautifully decorated windows made of large local woods. The name “Chelekot” was derived from the beautiful wooden blocks used in its construction.

The village is home to several notable heritage sites, including the graves of famous people such as the wife of King Tewodros II and the mother of Prince Alemayehu Tewodros. The church also has separate rooms built for each tomb, showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of the area.

Chelekot is situated at an approximate elevation of 2,100 meters above sea level and features a gently rolling Antalo Limestone plateau. The area is known for its well-constructed houses and well-kept gardens, which contribute to its picturesque environment.

Chelekot is a significant tourist destination due to its historical and cultural importance. Visitors can explore the ancient church, admire the beautiful 19th-century paintings, and learn about the village’s rich history. The village’s serene environment and well-preserved heritage make it an ideal spot for tourists interested in Ethiopian history and culture.
