Ethiopian Airlines has inked a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global aerospace Safran for the delivery of Z400 economy class seats across eight Boeing 777-9 aircraft, reinforcing its bold fleet expansion plan. The deal was signed at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.

The state-of-the-art aircraft are slated for delivery by mid-2027, each equipped with 383 economy class seats โ€” a clear signal of Ethiopian Airlines’ continued growth trajectory and its unwavering commitment to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency.

The Z400 seats, specifically selected for their performance in long-haul operations, offer passengers a significantly upgraded inflight entertainment experience with 13-inch HD screens, a major leap from the previous 11.6-inch models. Engineered for sustainability, the seats are 12.5% lighter than the previous generation, thanks to fewer components and the use of advanced lightweight materials, which contribute to lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.

This latest agreement builds on the long-standing partnership between Ethiopian Airlines and Safran, with past collaborations including seat integrations on the airlineโ€™s Airbus A350 fleet in both business and economy class cabins.

โ€œWe are pleased to have signed this MoU with Safran for the provision of the Z400 seats for our 777-9 aircraft,โ€ said Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. โ€œAs a technology-driven airline, we are committed to enhancing our passengersโ€™ onboard experience through innovations that blend comfort, operational efficiency, and sustainability.โ€

Echoing this sentiment, Victoria Foy, CEO of Safran Seats, remarked: โ€œWe are delighted to deepen our partnership with Ethiopian Airlines by providing our advanced Z400 seats for their B777-9 fleet. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence in passenger comfort, supporting Ethiopian Airlines as it expands its horizons.โ€
