Escalation in Tigray: Recent Developments

By Desta Gebremdhin

  1. Ban on Military Commanders:
Getachew Reda, the President of the Tigray Interim Administration, issued a ban on three high-ranking military commanders affiliated with Debretsion Gebremichael’s faction of the TPLF. This move is seen as an attempt to assert authority over the security forces in the region.
  2. TPLF Office’s Response:
The TPLF office responded sharply, rejecting Getachew’s decision and referring to him as “Former President,” suggesting that his authority is illegitimate.
  3. Tigray Peace and Security Office’s Stance:
The Tigray Bereau of peace and Security, led by General Fesseha Kidanu, also dismissed Getachew’s ban, asserting that he lacks the power to make such decisions since he did not appoint the commanders in question. The office indicated its intention to continue “law enforcement” operations, which implies ongoing support for Debretsion’s faction.
  4. Warning from Getachew’s Office:
In a counter-response, Getachew’s office warned that General Kidanu would be held responsible for any consequences. The president also implicated the head of the security office in covering up serious criminal activities within the region.
  5. Control of Adigrat City:
Armed groups aligned with Debretsion’s faction have reportedly taken control of Adigrat City.
