Tigray Opposition ADP Declares Federal Government’s Western Tigray Resolution ‘Unconstitutional’
Assimba Democratic Party (ADP) issued a statement on Monday, marking the one-year anniversary of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, where it strongly criticized the Federal government’s resolution on Western Tigray as unconstitutional.
In the statement written in Amharic, ADP argued that attempting to resolve the Western Tigray issue in an unconstitutional manner would violate the hard-won peace agreement, which stipulates that such matters should be resolved in accordance with the FDRE (Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia) constitution.
On Monday, the Ethiopia Government Communication Service Ministry issued a statement indicating its plan to hold a referendum to address the Western Tigray issue, which has been occupied by Amhara forces since November 2020.
On the same day, Tigray IRA President Getachew Reda appeared on Tigray Television where he stated his administration lacks a legal mandate to conduct a referendum.
“The constitution is clear. If a referendum is going to take place, it is going to take place if the region council has agreed to it, in accordance with, of course, the house of Federation. There is no regional council to speak of in Tigray”. Getachew explained.
ADP further called on the federal government to withdraw all non-ENDF (Ethiopian National Defense Forces) forces, including Eritrean and Amhara forces, in accordance with the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
The party also stressed that it is the responsibility of the Federal government to facilitate the safe return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Tigrayan refugees in Sudan to their homes.
