USAID’s resumption of food assistance brings hope amongst vulnerable community in Tigray.

Mekelle፡ 18 November 2023(Tigray Herald)

USAID’s resumption of food assistance brings hope amongst vulnerable community in Tigray.

In a Statement issued on Tuesday, USAID announced it will resume providing food assistance as of next month.

This comes following negotiations with the Ethiopian government to bring reforms in food assistance structure.

The reforms aim to enhance oversight and beneficiary selection, ensuring confidence that food assistance reaches its intended recipients.

AID paused in Ethiopia six months ago amid widespread evidence of food diversion.
Aid was sooner halted in Tigray in May 2023 for the same reason.

Many expect this would bring a little relief to over a million of IDPs that continue to languish in different IDPs centers in Tigray.

According to the statement, the Government of Ethiopia has now agreed to operational changes in collaboration with humanitarian partners, facilitating enhanced identification and approval of beneficiaries based on vulnerability criteria. Additionally, commitments have been made to provide unimpeded access for USAID and third-party monitors to review sites across the country.
