President Getachew Reda Inaugurates ‘Democratic Governance Reform Programme in Tigray Region’

Tigray Interim Regional Administration (IRA) President Getachew Reda launched the ‘Democratic Governance Reform Programme in Tigray Region’ during a workshop held this morning in Mekelle.

Hanna Tetteh, the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, and Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN Ethiopia Resident Coordinator, were among the attendees at the workshop.

In his opening address, President Getachew Reda urged the UN and the international community to intensify their efforts to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Tigray, in addition to supporting democratization programs.

Cabinet members of the Tigray Interim Administration, including Vice President Tadesse Werede (Gen.), were present at the launch event.

Vice President of Tigray IRA, Tsadkan Gebretnsae (Gen.), provided an overview of the project, emphasizing its significance and noting that its impact would extend beyond the tenure of the Interim Administration.

Various stakeholders, including opposition parties, participated in a Q&A session, raising questions about the project.

Dejen Mezgebe, Chair of the Tigray Independence Party, emphasized the importance of ensuring the self-determination rights of the people of Tigray. Alula Hailu, Chair of the Opposition Salsay Weyane, criticized the project for excluding opposition parties from meaningful participation in the process.

The project is anticipated to have a significant positive impact on addressing the longstanding challenges related to democratic governance and public-service delivery in the region.
