The prioritization of Tigray’s survival and restoration as a nation by the Tigrayan political leadership, particularly the TPLF, is indeed imperative given the dire circumstances facing the region. However, while emphasizing the necessity of a survival struggle and the restoration of Tigray’s territorial integrity, it is essential for the leadership to adopt a nuanced approach that balances immediate needs with long-term objectives.

While the call for prioritizing the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and ensuring the full implementation of agreements such as the Pretoria Peace Agreement is commendable, the notion of holding off on elections until a later stage is debatable. Elections, when conducted transparently and inclusively, can serve as a crucial mechanism for democratic representation and the legitimization of governance structures, even amidst challenging circumstances.

Moreover, while acknowledging the gravity of the situation with a significant portion of Tigray’s territory under occupation and a large population displaced, the leadership must demonstrate agility in addressing both immediate humanitarian needs and broader strategic goals. This necessitates a comprehensive approach that encompasses not only territorial integrity but also socioeconomic recovery, reconciliation, and institutional rebuilding.

It is vital for the Tigrayan leadership to prioritize collective efforts and foster unity among diverse stakeholders, both within Tigray and at the national level. By rallying support around common goals and mobilizing resources effectively, the leadership can better navigate the complex challenges facing the region and advance the interests of the Tigrayan people.

Ultimately, while recognizing the urgency of addressing immediate threats to Tigray’s survival, the leadership must also demonstrate a commitment to democratic principles, human rights, and inclusive governance. By striking a balance between short-term imperatives and long-term aspirations, the Tigrayan political leadership can chart a path towards sustainable peace, stability, and prosperity for the people of Tigray.
