The Federal Government of Somalia welcomes the G7 statement

following the meeting of Foreign Ministers from the world’s top economies, expressing concern over the January 2024 agreement signed between Ethiopia and Somaliland. The statement, jointly issued by the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the USA, and the European Union, underscores Somalia’s position in international affairs.

The Federal Republic of Somalia welcomes the Communiqué issued by the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Capri, Italy, from April 16 to 19. We appreciate its emphasis on the Horn of Africa and Somalia, and commend the G7’s commitment to advancing peace, security, and stability in the region. We recognize their efforts to tackle food insecurity, poverty, armed conflict, extreme weather, and displacement, and value the ongoing humanitarian aid and international cooperation in addressing these challenges.

Somalia is devoted to upholding peace and security in the region and is eager to bolster its collaboration with the G7 and other international partners to ensure enduring peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa. However, dialogue with Ethiopia remains unattainable until it revokes the illegal memorandum of understanding with the northern region of Somalia (Somaliland) and demonstrates full respect for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and principle of non- interference.

Somalia appreciates the recognition of its progress in the institutional, macroeconomic, and security sectors. We remain committed to intensifying our fight against Al Shabaab and enhancing our institutional framework. The smooth transition of security responsibilities from the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is vital for national stability. Somalia is actively collaborating with the African Union and international partners to plan and execute this transition effectively while continuing to develop its security capabilities with support from the global community.
