Protest Against Gender Violence in Tigray

A peaceful rally in Mekelle and Adigrat on Tuesday condemned ongoing violence against women in Tigray. Organized by regional women’s associations and rights activists, the protest urged the interim administration to end sexual and gender violence and kidnappings. Protesters called for justice for abuse victims, following the recent death of an underage girl in Adwa, who was found dead after three months of abduction. Her kidnappers had demanded a ransom of 3 million Ethiopian birr, which her family could not pay. Violence against women has reportedly increased in Tigray since the outbreak of war in northern Ethiopia in 2020.
